Gaijin in Japan has had a significant update and undergone a bunch of maintenance. Everything should now be working fine but some bugs can be expected. If you come across any pesky bugs, like your blog doesn’t work because of a template issue, write it up on the site help section of the forum or send an email through the contact page and it will be dealt with asap.

There is still some tweaking to do around the site but this should have any effect on people using the site.

Email accounts for users have returned but they will not be activated on signup.  Email addresses will be created manually upon request for users who have over 5 posts on their blogs.

More to come.

Damien

Gaijin in Japan is undergoing maintenance and a number of updates. This process is expected to continue for up to 48 hours. It should now be ok to post and do what you would normally do within your admin area, however, some things like your sub-domain may not work as expected until the 48 hour period is over. There will be one more interruption to the service where you will not be able to access your admin nor the site at all but this is not expected to take a long time. This interruption will likely happen around 9.30am tomorrow morning.

Thanks for your understanding,

Damien

A series of 4 templates have been created for Gaijin in Japan.

This is the first series of templates for GIJ and more series will be coming in the future. At the moment they are exclusive to Gaijin in Japan users but they will probably be put under a creative commons license in the future (possibly 6 – 12 months although 1 will possibly be released almost immediately).

Template 1: GaijinHill

Template 2: GaijinGate

Template 3: GaijinSubway

Template 4: GaijinShibuya

I am sorry to announce that email will no longer be available to new users when they sign up for a blog. There have been a slew of Nigerian 419 scammers signing up so they can use the email address to run their scams.
This has caused problems for me having to deal with trying to delete accounts, the server administrators screaming murder and it could potentially cause problems for Gaijin in Japan as a website. So the best thing to do has been to disable the automatic signup for email. This will not effect signing up for a blog and it will not affect those that already have an email account (unless you’re a 419er).

The future of the email has yet to be decided but it may be something along the lines of people who want an email can request one after they have made 10 posts in a blog or something like that. This could also allow for larger accounts etc. But again, nothing has been decided for the moment.

For those of you who don’t know, a 491 fraud  (aka Nigerian Letter) is an email that will be sent spam style in the hopes of you giving them little bits of money for the promise of lots of money, sometimes millions! People have even died due to 419scams.

More info can be found on wikipedia.

The best defense against this type of fraud is to have a little common sense and to know that a complete stranger will never ever give you millions of dollars.

This is a picture of a Nigerian 419er who was made to take the photo by a scambaiter. Scambaiting is where you make scammers think you are interested and then make them do things like give YOU some money or make a fool out of them. Scambaiting seems fun. You should try it.
419eater.com is a great site where you can learn all about it and look at the foolish 419ers taking pictures of themselves in the trophy room.

p.s. Bill Gates does not track your email and will not give you any money unless you live in a 3rd world country. He wants to take your money by selling you Windows. And yes he may give that away again but it will not be to you or me so please stop forwarding those stupid emails!

The following are some example letters from 419ers. I do not have permission from them to post these up but they are welcome to come to me and try and sue me for copyright  Laughing

An animated gif is basically more than 1 image in 1 image file that rotates the visual display. In other words; a slide show or a short, small movie.

There are numerous ways to create animated gifs but the simplest way that I have come across is through a website called Gickr. Although there are some limitations in what is possible using this site, everything is automated and it is as simple as uploading your images and telling how fast you would like it to go. You then copy the link it provides and paste it into your blog like so:

This is the first in a series of posts about things that can be done with a blog beyond simple text.

You Tube.

If you are regularly on the net and haven’t heard of YouTube, the sand is probably a little too dense. But even if you have heard of YouTube, you may not know what it is about or what can be done with it.

To put it simply; YouTube is a website that hosts video clips. Many people are doing video diaries, video reviews or random rubbish, others are just uploading music clips or clips from TV shows to share. And the possibilities of what can be done are almost endless.

Many people who have a blog will upload a video to YouTube and display in on their blog like this.

If you have a blog at Gaijin in Japan, it’s as simple as pressing the YouTube/Google video button and putting in the link of the video you want to display on your page.

If you don’t want to use YouTube or Google Video but you still want to show a video clip, you can also upload it directly to Gaijin in Japan.
